Harper's Bazaar describes Dr Loretta Chen as "a force of nature", The Straits Times labels her "a Rebel with a Twist" and a "Wild Thing" whilst The Peak calls her a "critical arts entrepreneur". Labels aside, Loretta cuts a prominent figure in the hallowed halls of academia, corporate guilds and in the entertainment arena. This multi-hyphenate topped her Masters' cohort at the prestigious Royal Holloway College, University of London and is the first doctoral scholar in Theatre Studies from UCLA-NUS. She was Adjunct Professor in National University of Singapore (NUS), LASALLE- College of the Arts, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and Nanyang Technological University (NTU). She was also instrumental in setting up the Creativity, Innovation and Enterprise Centre at Singapore Polytechnic and was Artist in Residence in University of Toronto from 2010-2012.
As director, she writes, trains and does speaking engagements. Some of her notable productions include 13 Shaolin (a Singapore-China collaboration), 24 Pieties,10 Brothers, the internationally acclaimed 251, a "fresh, inspired and victorious" production of The Vagina Monologues (2006, 2008), two sold-out seasons of The Swimming Instructor, Postcards from Rosa, MAGICBOX, the "ingenious" What the Butler Saw and the Asian Premiere of the Broadway classic, Victor/Victoria starring international jazz sensation Laura Fygi and Grammy-nominated trumpeter, Ron King. Till date, she has received over 10 Life Theatre Awards nominations including Best Director.
In 2009, Loretta received the Martell Rising Personalities Award and was nominated as a Nominated Member of Parliament (NMP). Loretta is one of the faces in Evian's Live Young campaign, Hermes' P.S. I Silk You campaign and joins the ranks of Naomi Campbell and Robert Pattinson in The Body Shop's Stop Sex Trafficking project. She is also an ambassador for Habitat for Humanity (Singapore) and was part of the Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter Build in Chiang Mai and the inaugural Women's Build in Indonesia. She received an Amnesty International Freedom of Expression Award for her work in art activism and is a frequent face in the media and has been featured in The Peak, The Business Times, The Straits Times and all major publications.
She is a frequent panelist at leading universities and institutions speaking on a range on topics ranging from Leadership, Entrepreneurial Mindsets, Women in Management and a host of other media and cultural related areas. Unbeknown to many, she is a seasoned host and once ruled the airwaves of GOLD 90FM in the 90s. She has made her comeback to radio and hosts The Art of Lush daily on Lush 99.5FM. Her book, Woman on Top: Life, Leadership, Lessons will be published by Marshall Cavendish International and out on shelves from 2014.
Loretta was honored as one of Asia's Most Inspiring Women and remains actively involved in various social campaigns, charity outreach projects. She worked as the Specialty Trainer and is currently the International Mentor to Druk Holdings and Investments (DHI) Limited BEGIN Program. She is also the Creative & Business Development Director of The Activation Group.
