Amochu Township Project

The Amochu (Toorsa) broadens to over 1 km as it exits Bhutan at Phuentsholing. The river has been eroding considerable land and it poses a threat to the development of the already congested township, which is also geographically and commercially strategic. Flood mitigation and land reclamation measures can overcome these problems. According to a detailed study report submitted by consultants of the Dansih Hydraulic Institute in November 2007 a recovery of 865 Acres of land is feasible. The project would take three years and the recovered land could be utilised for residential, commercial or industrial purposes. An environmental impact analysis was also carried out and it was seen that none of the impacts are seriously adverse and all the impacts could be mitigated with a little effort.

Current Status:
The government has handed over the project to DHI for implementation. DHI has floated an RFP to a group of short listed consultancy firms on 27 September 2010. The consultancy will be carried out over a period of ten months and is expected to start by January 2011. By the end of the year, DHI expects to have found a suitable partner to carry out the land reclamation and develop a new city on the reclaimed land on a PPP basis.
