Bhutanโs blockchain-based National Digital Identity (NDI) platform was featured at the World Bankโs Global Digital Summit in Washington D.C., held in March 2025 under the theme โDigital Pathways for All.โ The event brought together global innovators to explore inclusive and resilient digital ecosystems.
Built on Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) principles, Bhutanโs NDI empowers citizens with secure, decentralized control over their digital credentials. It is already integrated with over 40 government and private services, including in health, banking, education, telecom, and transport, with plans to expand into air travel, e-voting, and land registration.
Bhutan NDI was showcased alongside leading organizations such as Google, Giga, and GovStack, drawing strong interest from government officials, industry leaders, and digital transformation practitioners. The Bhutan team actively contributed to high-level roundtables focused on digital jobs and service delivery.
In one of the key sessions, โDelivery of Digital Public Services: Dynamic Social Registries, Leveraging on ID and Digital G2P Payments,โ Pallavi Sharma, Lead Marketing & Communications of Bhutan NDI highlighted how Bhutanโs decentralized identity system is not only enhancing public service delivery but also unlocking access to private sector services. This dual impact is supporting a more seamless and inclusive experience for Bhutanese citizens and residentsโforming the backbone of Bhutanโs growing digital economy.
The platform represents a strategic pillar of DHIโs innovation-led transformation agenda, reinforcing Bhutanโs position as a frontrunner in secure and citizen-centered digital solutions.
